536th AAA Automatic Weapons Battalion (Mobile)

The 536th served in the North African and Mediterranean theaters of operations. They entered into combat in North Africa in November 1943. The battalion operated in the Anzio beachhead from February to June 1944. Elements of the battalion later formed part of Task Force 45 in Italy. TF45 was a polyglot task force of American and British antiaircraft gunners acting as infantry. Following the disbanding of Task Force 45 in February 1945, the 536th (along with the 434th, 435th, and 900th AAA Automatic Weapons Battalions) and the 2nd Armored Group were reorganized and activated as the 473rd Infantry Regiment (Separate). The 473rd was then attached to the 92nd Infantry Division.
