HEADQUARTERS
CAMP UPTON, NEW YORK

TO EACH SELECTEE, 1222d RECEPTION CENTER,
CAMP UPTON, NEW YORK

Since it is impossible to greet each of you individually, it is hoped that you will consider and accept this as a personal welcome to Camp Upton.
You are now a member of the armed forces of our United States. It is a service combining hard work and, occasionally, personal discomfort. Your reward will be the satisfaction of a duty well performed and the intimate knowledge of your fine contribution to the defense and security of your country.
Regardless of your previous occupation, profession or walk of life — you have made a sacrifice and now are experiencing an abrupt change in your mode of life. The latter requires a real effort on your part. Compliance with the Army's many regulations and orders at first may seem unnecessary but soon you will discover why they ARE necessary.
You will only be here long enough for us to clothe, medically immunize you against smallpox and typhoid, and classify you. The latter procedure will enable you to be placed in a position, upon your transfer elsewhere, that best fits your experience and ability insofar as possible. It thus will be our endeavor to send you to an organization where your previous civil vocation will better serve to the advantage of the individual and our Army. Each case is determined on its own individual merits — favoritism or class distinction has no place in your and my Army — all selectees are on the same plane.
