FLAK From the German FlugzeugAbwehrKannone — or "airplane defense cannons" — flak was the often impenetrable wall of antiaircraft airbursts that airplanes had to negotiate on their way to targets and over the targets themselves. American aircrews were issued flak helmets and armored flak vests to avoid being wounded by the resulting shrapnel from detonating antiaircraft shells. |
