My father, T/5 Clifford Eugene Audinet trained at Camp Callan in 1943 and was assigned to the 532nd AAA-AWBtn. He fought from the staging area in North Africa until his death on April 26, 1945 at Rapallo, Italy. At the time of his death the 532nd had been disolved and personnel assigned to the 473rd Infantry Regiment, 92nd Infantry Division (this was at Montecatini in Jan of 1945). I never knew him so I am trying to gather all information I can. Can anyone help me to add to my dad's story? In their memory..... Member AWON (American WWII Orphans Network, www.awon.org)

I recall a rocker in her living room, a cardboard "church" fan and a small pristine house near the center of town. What a joy to see my own grandmother's brother honored so kindly. "Mommy" and Grandma would have both been proud. Thank you. This web sight has given me memories to cherish. I can't wait to show this to my parents! Bien fait! Merci mille fois!

My grandmother, Flossie Gastineau Oakes, wrote geneological books about her paternal family-line. The Gastineau's, her brothers James and Russell were always in the stories she told us as children. She loved her brothers and parents with a passion no one could have missed. I never seem to be able to remember my great uncles, but their mother was a stately, strong woman. I recall a rocker in her living room, a cardboard

Seeking ANY assistance in locating members of the 532nd Anti Aircraft Artillery-Automatic Weapons Btn. serving in North Africa and Italy 1943-45. My dad, T/5 Clifford Eugene Audinet (KIA 4/26/45) was radioman for the unit until it was added to the 2nd Btn of the 473 Infantry Regiment in Jan of '45 at Montecatini, It. Thanks Patrick J. Audinet

When I enlisted, I was in the 78th Coast Artillery (1940), Battery A, at Camp Haan, CA. Later, I went with the 70th in the Pacific Theatre. Our unit at Camp Haan was called the 351st Caost Artillery, AA SEP. Searchlight Battallion. We were the first unit to set up the Caost Artillery, but I can't find much about it. If anyone has any info or would like to contact me, please email me. TEN HUT!

Anybody able to assist with advice as to WW2 photo archive web sites? Especially interested in accessing US military photo archives if this is possible. I know they have a large amount of uncatalogued material which deserves to be seen by people like me. Have just attended the 437th Troop Carrier Group Associations 25th reunion in Mount Pocono, PA. Had a great time with a super bunch of people. If you were in the 437th, drop me a line. I'm a 31 year old amateur historian researching the history of the WW2 GI's in and around Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. If you were there then, I want to hear from you. Great site that improves as it gets older. Keep it up.

Congratulations on an excellent site. You provide a fascinating insight, not only into the work done by often overlooked units, but also into the everyday life of the U.S servicemen in Europe. I hope you guys realise the high esteem you are still held in "over here". Long may your memory be kept alive. As a point of information, the a/c that Capt Mcgrew is leaning on ( in the Joshua Snook collection ) appears to be a Heinkel He-111.

I am interested in hearing a lot of memoirs of soldiers for a project Im doing in my European History AP class. I tried many of your links and they dont work. I was just wondering if you could dirrect me to some good sites of memoirs of WW I or WW II European Soldiers, or good books I could read about them. Thanks so much!

You might want to check out my small contribution to WW2 history at: http://www.flash.net/~hfwright/dl_index.htm It's a day-by-day history of WW2. I've been working on it for two years. I am a niece of James Gastineau, daughter of Russell. I am glad to see a piece of history for generations to come, collected in part one of my favorite uncles. He never spoke about the war but certainly was affected by it. He never really liked buying Japanese made items! We will miss him but have a piece of him on the Net! Thank God for men like him that fought for our country.

Thank you! This is my father's old unit. Actually I didn't know much of the details of his time during the war except that he did run a search light. Seeing this link I remembered and sure enough, this was it. You have filled in many of the blanks for me. Dad used to have a box of photos and memorabilia but sadly they have disappeared. Apparently he was in A Battery so if anyone remembers my father Charles Sparks then please feel welcome to contact me. Thank you gentlemen.

The best WW2 veteran's site I've hit - well done to all involved. I am researching the history of all US units based in and around Marlborough in Wiltshire, England during WW2. These include the 101st Airborne, 28th Infantry, XX Corps, 69th Signal battalion, 347 Station Hospital, 17th Airborne, 437th Troop Carrier Group 627th and 633rd Ordnance Ammunition Co's. If you were in the area then and you have any recollections, photographs, memorabilia etc, please get in touch. I am aged 30 and have been working on this labour of love for 9 years. My interest stems from my great aunt marrying a GI based in Marlborough in 1945. His name was Lloyd Fancher from the city of Portland, Oregon. If you knew him (he died in 1969), make contact as I know hardly anything about him or why he was in the town.

Very interesting web site. In 1942, I was a member of the Anti Aircraft Board (US ARMY Ground Forces Board #1). Colonel Chrislow was the first CO of the Board, then Colonel Lewis. We were developing AA gear working with scientists and engineers from all over the country. Our firing point was at Topsail Beach. I remember a POW camp at Davis. Dependents lived down in Wilmington but I stayed at the base. I was later transfered to Fort Bliss, TX with the entire unit.

I was greatly impressed with the dedication page. You do honor to those of the 225th and all veterans that gave their best and to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. My father was with the 67th AAA Gun Battalion Battery C from North Africa to Italy then into southern France and Germany. I have been to a few of their reunions and really enjoy myself. I won't tie up your page any more, but if you have questions or just wnat to drop a line, just e-mail me. I was in the Marines and now am in the Army Reserve lookin to retire in November. My best to you and the 225th in 1998. Gary

It was my grandfather, Percy Spencer, that made the magnetron practical & manufacturable during WW2. His effort resulted in supplying over 90% of the tubes used, placed Raytheon on the map, and eventually resulted in his invention of the microwave oven. There was something on the discovery channel recently. A more distrant relative invented the Spencer Carbine, the first practical/manufacturable repeating rifle. Also known as Lincoln;s choice, it was the key technology of the Civil War. Got some art if your interested. Rod Spencer.

I would like to write, that I came to this homapage by searching on my own surname, Barbasso, and ended here by surprise. First I want to say that this writings about the war, with all the pictures and persons, make the whole war situation more personal. It makes you feel like you were there yourself, which is very positiv. Secondly, I would like to know about the family of this, Tech.Sgt. Samuel Barbasso. I would like to know if there are any relatives of his left. By this, I thank you all, Sevim Barbasso

This site is a wonderful surprise, informative and nicely designed. I particularlly enjoyed the "Memories" section because my great-grandparents also settled in the lower Catskills when they arrived from Europe. After 45 years, my father finally asked the Army for his medals. He has some incredible pictures of the concentration camps I have often thought of putting on a web site. DB

I am a US Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA, and I'm with a AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopter squadron. I was born and raised in the Chicagoland area and was back visiting my family during the summer ('97). While back there I took a quick drive through Ft. Sheridan, and being a bit of a history buff I was intregued by the old buildings and officer's quarters that are no longer occupied. I know that there are some resident reserve units still operating out of the base, but I am interested in hearing from anyone who was stationed at this base, and would like to know what kinds of usits were trained there, periods of activity, etc. And to all of you old-time veterans, you can rest assured your legacy is being carried with dignity. You can also rest assured that this country is well protected by today's military, despite any negative press that may appear. Also, your US Marines are on duty keeping America free, and our shores protected from foreign enemies. Semper Fidelis. SSgt Gregory Weir (USMC), HMLA 775, MAG 46, Camp Pendleton, CA

My late father served with the 143rd AAA Gun Bn in WWII. He talked very little about his experiences during the war. His unit arrived on Utah Beach in late Aug, 1944. They were assigned to the 50th AAA Brigade, and then, sfter receiving orders , were assigned to the 47th Brigade outside Paris. In Nov, 44, they were assigned to the 52nd Brigade and sent to Huy, Belgium, then deployed around Liege, primarily fending off the V1 rocket attacks. During the Bulge they were on the move, attached to the 11th AAA Group, supporting elements of the 82nd Airborne around Werbomont, Mannhey, Snamont,Stoumont, La Gleize, Aywaille, Spa. After the bulge they were attached to the 31st AAA Group in belgium, then in March they moved into Germany to the vicinity of Duren, passing throught he Siegfried line at AAchen. In April they moved up to the Rhine to dfend the bridge near the Remagen. After the war ended they were assigned to the 2nd Air Disarmament Wing, 108th AAA Group, returning to the States in spring, 1946. I would be curious to know if your unit had crossed paths with my dad's unit at anytime? Any answer would be appreciated as I am attempting to find out what little I can of his circumstances during the war from personal recollections. Thnk You, Dave Spitz (dspitz@erols.com)

I am also a native of the North East of England, and I was very glad to read your kind words about Newcastle and its Brown Ale (which I discovered on sale in Long Beach CA last year!). I come from a place called Dudley which is 1 mile from Seaton Burn - one of the battalion sites mentioned in the Newcastle section. I have printed a copy of this section and sent it to my mother. Congratulations on a very well presented informative site. I am not a WWII vet but I did serve in the British Army's only Searchlight unit from 1972 to 1989. We were equipped with 90cm carbon arc lights and I had the responsibility of keeping the things operational despite a shortage of spares etc. The squadron was eventually re-equipped with American 30 in Xenons and the 90s would have been scrapped had it not been for a very enthusiastic ex soldier whose name I don't remember who converted them to use Xenon bulbs. They are still in service and I last saw them lighting up a performance of Beating Retreat by Her Majesties Household Division on Horseguards Parade at the beginning of June this year . By the way all of the 90cm lights first saw service with the Royal Artillery AA units about 1935-36

Congratulations, Larry Belmont: I received your e-mail inquiry after you found me somehow through your search of records. I was a student electronics technician for the SCR-584 Radar maintenance, stationed at Fort Monmouth New Jersey when the war ended. My memory of the events has faded with the years. I was never on active duty nor was ever connected to searchlights. I was one of the few at the school who seemed able to align the servo transmitters from the SCR-584 to transmit correct information to the mechanical analog computer which eventually pointed the guns toward the target. We had some interesting experiences of guns pointing in all directions because of incorrect synchronization. I wonder if the deployed searchlights had the same trouble.

I never knew a great deal about my father's experience in WWII, as he chose not to speak about the painful memory. I am now 43 and realize the importance of the involvement of our country in this war. I remember my father saying that he had received the bronze star medal for designing a hedgerow cutter. I never knew exactly what this was, but I am very currious as to the nature of this machine and its significance at Normandy. I would appreciate any guidance in researching this subject. Thank you. Glad to see that there are others who are interested in preserving our father's military involvement. I'm new on the WWW and looking around at subjects that interest me. I'll look back in at a later date. I found your site quite interesting. Please continue with the good work.
