I was a member of the 834th Engineer Aviation Battalion. I helped build airfield E-1 at Saint Laurent sur Mer and airfield A-1 at Saint Pierre du Mont. Your location of A-1 is in error. I lies between St Pierre du Mont and Point du Hoc.Airfield E-1 lies above Saint Laurent sur Mer. Several kilometers separate E-1 and A-1. The one is not an extension of the other. You seem to want to merge them but you cannot. These are two airfields and cannot be joined. How are you going to account for the kilometers that separate them?

Dedicated in love to the Greatest generation, To my father Jack Elton Bowman, my WWII hero who still, at 84 years young, still shows me wisdom and bravery. Dad graduated Arcadia High school Val Dictorum in 1941 and all the man joined the Marines the following day. He was at Tinian and Saipan. On Aug 6, 1945 dad was in a transport ready to invade Japan. Thank God for the leaders of our Country. We all owe so much. I enjoy history of our greatest generation, American history is the greatest story.::This year I was privledged to go to our nations capitol and see whe WWII memorial and the Viet Nam Wall. Dad did not care about the memorial, he says, they had a job to do, and they did it, no thanks or memorial required.::I have other stories dad has told me about his life, and his service, he never or rarely spoke about his service to our country untill the last 10 or so years, he has slowly opened up more to show his rare and strong traits. He has taught me so much, I love him so. ::Dad will not be with me forever, my forever has always been with him. I will lean on my greatest generation for continued strenght.::Mom is 80 and when she was a girl growing up in the New Mexico Mountains. When she was young and on the farm, the sky lit up early early one morning. The paper said an amunition dump blew up. She remembers this day distinctly.::I enjoy this websight greatly. A wonderful websight. ::THANK YOU!!!!!::Steven Payne Tuttle::Cousin of Nelson Payne Tuttle::Panel 8W row 24 Viet Nam Memorial Wash.D.C.::

I just returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom II where I served as a Company Commander. I have a deep appreciation fo what the boys in WWII went through - my experiences pale in comparison. Now that I cam ehome safely, she feels she can handle to hear what Nono went through. If anyone remembers him and has some stories, please contact me anytime. What a great site. Are their any of your members that can tell me about the "Fighter Brakes" on the P-61C. I am building a scale plastic model with my grandson and we need to know if these hydroliclly controled panels sat in their own wells or lay on the top & underside of the wing surface. A picture or recollections from a mechanic or pilot would be wonderful. We have a drawing of kind of what they look like for shape and size.

Apr 6, 2005 at 21:33:03Greg Sarnecki (shturmovik@yahoo.com)
Dear Skylighters,::::Excellent website! One small fly in the ointment though is the webpage (http://www.skylighters.org/history/airfields/alga1.html) that links A-1 to A-21. I agree with the previous poster from Feb2005: A-1 is at St. Pierre du Mont nr. Point du Hoc, as the aerial photo at the bottom of the webpage indicates (there are no draws in the photo as you would expect if the airfield in the photo were at St. Laurent behind Omaha beach). Not sure why A-1 is linked to A-21, except maybe by their close proximity. (Was A-1 discontinued and everything transferred to A-21?) In any event, the two villages are several miles apart and the aerial photo evidence is unshakable.::::Sorry to rain on your parade, because otherwise the website is as I said excellent.::::Keep at it and add those pages to the different A-# airbases,::Greg.

I am a Viet Nam veteran myself, but I've got to tell you that reading some of these comments only reinforces my belief in the greatness of the WWII generation. This is a great webb site. Thank you! Especially for the great pictures of the pin-ups. Aren't they all lovely?

Hi to all you guys.::Apologies at first, I am not a WWII vet. My interest in your website is that the 225th AAA was stationed here in South Wales UK (Dan y Parc).::I am the owner of the Lodge House right across the River Usk from where you were stationed at the Dan y Parc estate.::The Lodge House is situated on the A40 Road and is clearly seen on the bottom map of you web page.::I may be of service to you in mapping the exact location of your camp (Web-page indicates that you are uncertain). Please forward to me any information or clues and I will see what I can do, and take Photographs if permitted.::I am also interested if any of you have memories of the lodge house? What it looked like in those days etc.::I am told that the Lodge House (Originally a Gate House for a very large mansion) was used as a Fishing Lodge during the period WWII to 1960. Some of you may have been inside and taken photographs? I know this is a long shot, but my wife and I are determined to return this building to as near as possible to it's original state.::If any of you are intending to visit the area, please contact me and I will give any advice you need with regards places to stay etc. (I have no interest in any local business and I am not touting)::My best wishes to you all, let's hope we can help each other out.::Regards::Paul D Holt::::::

This is an excellent site. I love the photographs of the pin-up girls, and am convinced that no generation has produced as many beautiful women as yours. If I were forced to pick the prettiest--or at least my five favorites--I'd go with Adele Mara, Hedy Lamarr, Joan Fontaine, Gloria DeHaven, and Teresa Wright. I realize that Wright wasn't a pin-up, but she sure ranked right up there with the prettiest women of 1942.::::This list is subject to weekly change.::::My highest regard to the men and women of the Second World War. My father was one of you, God rest his beloved soul.

This is a fabulous website!! It is captivating to relive the most awesome event in man's history since Jesus Christ. You provide wonderful and intimate details on all areas of life in WWII. I wish I could have been a member of yours, the greatest generation. My dad was. He was a B-25 navigator with over 50 missions in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands in 1944 (396th Sqdn, 41st Bomb Group (M) 7th AAF). Virtually every human alive back then was involved to some degree in that global conflagration. I love your site and visit often. Thanks for the excellent presentation!!

Your chapter, "Antwerp X - The AAA War Against the Buzz Bombs" includes this entry, "601st AAA Gun Battalion — probably outfitted with 90-mm guns."::::My father, Maynard Rohrer, was a sergeant who served with the 601st, and I can confirm the 90-mm comment. Growing up, I heard Dad repeatedly talk about the 90-mm. I remember in particular Dad telling me that during the Battle of the Bulge they prepared their 90-mm guns to be used as field artillery in case the German advance hadn't been stopped.::::Prior to D-Day Dad was stationed in Folkstone, England, where he claimed the 601st had shot down the first V-1 doodlebug.

My grandfather Charles W. Burt, recently passed away. It was only after his death that his involvement with the nightfighters became common knowledge. Everything that I learn only serves to make me prouder of a man that I already considered a hero. My thanks to all veterans.

Terrific site! Found it when looking up something on Pucauville, France, our first bivouac area after arriving on Utah Beach on 8 July 1944. I, too, was honored to serve in the AAA, the 119th AAA Gun Bn. (Mobile), 90mm's. Our unit was originally assigned to the lst Army in Normandy, and then with Patton's 3rd Army through to Germany, with a stint in Luxembourg and Belgium during the Bulge. Our battalion was utilized as both anti-aircraft and field artillery. The 119th received the designation "The Shotgun Batallion" having fired over 8,000 rounds in a ten-day period prior to the St. Lo breakthrough July 25. We participated in five campaigns in the ETO.::::Your web site is very informative and particularly well done. Congratulations, and a hello to all AAA vets who may still be around.

As a brand new 2nd Lt. with a new pair of pilot's wings on my uniform, I arrived at Campt Davis in July 1944. I was in a small detachment of pilots assigned to tow targets for those going through training in anti-aircraft. For a while my wife and I lived in a "house-trailer" right across the highway from the main gate. After about two months, I transferred along with others ( Red Smith, Dewey Weiford and Dewey Meyers) to Bluenthal Field at Wilmington to a Tow Target Unit to two for P-47 fighter aircraft.

I was in OCS class at Camp Davis, N.C. starting December 7th, 1942 and graduated February 25th, 1943. I would be interested in contacting any other member of the same graduating class. Also, I was a member of the 369th CA(AA) Regiment from New York City and left that unit in Oahu, Hawaii to attend OCS class. I would be interested in contacting any and all members of that unit.
