- December 22, 1943 left Kilmer for boat. Got on Queen Mary, back almost broke from pack. A band was playing (guess that made it legal). Queen Mary is a sleek-looking ship. 18,000 troops on board, quite crowded.
- December 23, 1943 left New York without convoy. The ship can outrun any sub (I hope!).
- December 24, 1943 lousiest Xmas I ever spent, felt like crying, but we found some fellows singing and chimed in. 800 nurses on board made the trip a little pleasant. They were our first contact with the English. Don't think much of them.
- December 27, 1943 trip uneventful except for a few scares. A few subs were spotted. Most everyone sea-sick. I didn't get sick, fortunately. Slept on promenade deck every other night, cold as Hell.
- December 28, 1943 attached by a few planes one night. No damage or casualties.
