  • December 30, 1943 — arrived Gourock, Scotland at the Firth of Clyde after 4,500-mile sea voyage. Didn't miss Iceland by much. Scotland looks so beautiful (any land does now). Disembarked and left Gourock, which, incidentally, is a busy place full of ships and subs. Arrived Blandford Camp, England, South Base Sector, the same night or early morning of the next day. Very exhausted after no sleep on train. Understand we will wait here for equipment. Meanwhile we have classes, etc.
  • January 1944 — visited many English towns. Everything is small: towns, cars, roads, and women. Transferred our good American money for Limey bills. Hard to get used to it, but after playing poker for a while, you get on to it. Finally got searchlights and one radar.
