  • March/April/May 1944 — set up in old radar positions. Not bad living in houses. Old radar "1069" is giving a lot of trouble. Hope to get a new one soon. Moved to other position and was issued tents and moved into a real estate land owner's place. Went to Newcastle a few times. Great place to drink and dance. English girls sure are easy to pick up. Everybody is talking about the invasion. When will it come? Made a trip down to Cheltenham and got parts of a new radar, "116." Ten days later got a complete new radar, "71." On the way down saw all kinds of signs of coming invasion. Roads all blocked with convoys. We are ordered into the First Army ("A"). Something's up.
  • June 3, 1944 — left Newcastle for Salisbury Plains. Slept in tents. Not doing anything special.
  • June 6, 1944 — woke up early on account of noise of bombers overhead, coming in a steady stream. I have never seen anything like it. At 10 o'clock we got word that the invasion is on. Everyone is excited. The question on everybody's lips is "When will we go?"
