- June/July 1944 one boy in a column put his bag down for a rest. He sat it right on a mine and blew him and a few others to Hell. Pup tents by the thousand have 4 dead soldiers each in them. A bulldozer is digging graves and shoving the bodies in. We are the first radar to go into France, but they ask us to keep the damn thing off as the "88s" can zero in on our frequency. I kept it off. We are not far from Carentan, St. Lo, and St. Mere Eglise. All of these towns are a wreck. People are all very happy to see the Yanks.
- July 26, 1944 left position for Cherbourg. Protecting harbor installations. We moved into old German position. Nothing much doing here now. Saw a few booby traps. Almost tripped over them.
- August 30, 1944 moved from Cherbourg to Vannes, attached to 9th Air Corps, protecting
Black Widow P-61 Night Fighters. A beautiful plane. Not much doing here also considering there are about 15,000 Germans at St. Nazaire and Lorient. We pulled some GIs out of a car they overturned. 2 dead and 2 injured.
