by Frances E. Maher, wife of the late John Maher, a former member of A Battery.
John, a resident of Amityville, Long Island, NY for many years, passed away on February 10, 2001, at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY at the age of 78. Born in Brooklyn on January 25, 1923, he had been employed as a steam-fitter with Local 638 in New York City for many years. Along with his fellow Skylighters, he landed on Omaha Beach and earned battle stars for the campaigns in Normandy, the Rhineland, Northern France, and Central Europe. While serving from January 1943 through December 1945, he earned the European–African–Middle Eastern Service medal, the Good Conduct medal, and the WW II Victory Medal. At war's end, his section illuminated the Eiffel Tower to celebrate the end of the war in Europe. John was active in the Amityville Little League and the Amityville Varsity Club, and he enjoyed golfing and making golf clubs. He is survived by his wife, Frances E., as well as his daughter, Deborah E. Maher; three sons, Thomas, Richard, and Joseph R.; grandchildren Angela, Jessica, Jason, Richard, Johanna, Joshua, and Jonathan; and great grandson Thomas. John was interred at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, NY.
