The World War II Photo of the Week for 21 January 2002

Breaking the Ice and the Jerries ... The original caption reads: "Four Coast Guard cutters operating in ice-jammed Arctic waters have smashed three attempts by Nazis to establish radio-weather outposts in Greenland, the U.S. Navy reported in Washington, today. One German trawler was sunk, another captured, and a third found abandoned. A radio station was captured and destroyed and 60 prisoners taken in the series of actions which took place from last July to October. Here, men from one of the American cutters (right, background), the Northland, examine piles of ammunition and supplies near one of the German armed trawlers, set afire after it was hopelessly jammed in ice." An ACME Newspictures photo, dated December 14, 1944, from the Webmaster's collection.
