The World War II Photo of the Week for 30 April 2001

Good Luck Charms ... Pictured is the front end of a B-17 belonging to the 34th Bomb Group (H) (H for Heavy; 7th Squadron, operating out of Mendlesham, Suffolk County, England, aka "Station 156"). The Flying Fortress, dubbed Gotta Haver, went into battle with two photos of movie star and pinup queen June Haver taped to her nose with black electrical tape (photo by Dexter Jordan). An enlargement of one of the photos used to decorate the plane is reproduced below, and a few extra portraits of June as she looked in the early forties are thrown in for educational purposes!
