The World War II Photo of the Week for 30 July 2001

Lightening the Load ... This B-26 Marauder, which had recently delivered a bomb load near the Italian front lines, has had one of its engines shot out and is limping home on the remaining one. The order was given to throw out everything removable to ease the strain on the remaining engine. A photographer in the wing plane caught the drama as cartridge belts of ammunition were hurled from a gun position, shortly to be followed by the guns themselves. The bomber returned to its home base safely. USAAF photo, from the Webmaster's collection.
