SMOKY (29 K)

Yorkie Doodle Dandy

Smoky, a four-pound Yorkshire Terrier found in an abandoned foxhole in New Guinea during WW II, flew on combat missions in the Southwest Pacific, helped get an airbase operational in the Phillipines (check out the October 1999 issue of National Geographic for that story), entertained troops and hospitalized soldiers, and had her own TV show after the war. Trained by Bill Wynne, Smoky, who held the rank of Corporal, could walk a tightwire blindfolded. Photo from the Webmaster's collection.
