ServicesIn many respects Camp Davis resembles a city, with its own government, courts, police force, utilities, churches, hospital, clinic, theatres, recreation centers, and stores. Here, however, lives are more related and the government more solicitous of the individual's welfare than in civilian communities. Soldiers learn that expenses such as laundry can be kept to a minimum, thanks to services established within Camp Davis. The camp has its own laundry and dry cleaning plants. Married officers and men may patronize the sales commissary which deals largely in groceries and household items. The camp exchange system does a great volume of business. Personnel living away from camp receive special consideration from the Wilmington Housing Authority, which has jurisdiction over the Lake Forest and Hillcrest projects. The Billeting Officer in Wilmington keeps a list of apartments and homes for rent. Camp Davis is fortunate in having a Red Cross field office. Operating as a liaison agency between the Army and the public, the Red Cross also does important work in recreation and assists soldiers with personal problems. The Staff Judge Advocate is eager to help in legal matters. |
