ATTACK ON RABAUL

A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier [unidentified in the caption, but most
likely the USS Saratoga (CV-3) or USS Princeton (CVL-23)] steams
in the area of Rabaul, New Britain. The plumes of smoke in the
wake of the carrier are from Japanese fighters shot down in
the battle. Photo taken during the second wave of air
strikes carried out on Rabaul, November 11, 1943,
from the Webmaster's collection.
