This Me262 jet-powered fighter-bomber has shared the fate of
scores of other of its kind, relegated to being picked apart by
souvenir hunters after being abandoned by the Germans for
lack of fuel or loss of its home base. As the Allies overran dozens
of Luftwaffe airdromes in the Spring of 1945, GIs discovered
Hitler's vaunted aerial armada hidden in forests and next to
autobahns, never to fly in great numbers against their foes.
