Members of a U.S. gun crew clear a path through a pile of 2,100
shell casings that they fired from their 105-mm howitzer over a
period of three weeks (100 shells a day). This gun is just one of
thousands of guns attached to the seven Allied armies arrayed
along the Western Front from Holland to Switzerland. From June
to October 1944, the U.S. 1st, 3rd, and 9th armies alone fired
4,400,000 rounds of 105-mm ammunition, 1,250,000 rounds of
155's, 3,500,000 rounds of mortar shells, and
300,000,000 rounds of small-arms ammo.
