Dated July 8, 1946, this Acme News photo shows an urn
containing soil from Bastogne, Belgium which was soaked with
the blood of American paratroopers blood during the historic
"Battle of the Bulge." The grim memento of the Screaming Eagles'
sacrifice was to be presented to President Harry S. Truman on
July 10. Pictured are General Gerald J. Higgins of the 101st Airborne
Division (center; note he is wearing the U.S. Military Academy
patch on his left arm), the Belgian Minister of Defense, Colonel
Raul Defraiteur (left), and Baron Silvercruys, the
Belgian Ambassador to the U.S. (right). The urn was made of
jade green malachite from the Belgian Congo.
