On September 3, 1943, British and Canadian forces crossed
this narrow strait (of Messina) and landed on the "toe" of the
figurative "boot" of the Italian mainland. Pictured are the
Sicilian city of Messina (foreground), Reggio Calabria (right
background), and San Giovanni (left background). The landings
fulfilled the Allied promise to the Russians of an
invasion of the European continent.
