BREECHES BUOY

A casualty of the battle for Saipan lies on a stretcher supported
by a breeches buoy transfer system. The man is being transferred
from the destroyer (background) to a larger ship with better
medical facilities. Another wounded seaman lies on the destroyer's
deck, awaiting his turn. Both vessels lay just off the shore of
Saipan, out of range of Japanese shore batteries. Associated Press
