Torgau, Germany as it looked before the war. Located on the Elbe
River, about 75 miles southwest of Berlin, Torgau became famous
when elements of the U.S. 69th Infantry Division linked up with
Soviet forces there, symbolizing the crushing of Nazi opposition
between two great Allied armies. The bridge in the background
was destroyed at the time of the historic meeting.
