 | Cpl. Joseph E. Oleskiewicz, a 101st Airborne Division paratrooper, stands in the door of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain on the evening of June 5, 1944 as his unit loaded up for the D-Day drop later that evening. Note the chalk number on the airplane, 21. The jump- master for Oleskiewicz's stick would have worn a placard labeled 21 to aid in ensuring that the correct units boarded the correct planes. The interior wall of the plane would have also been chalked "21" and records would reflect it as well.
