Snafu's Birth

USAAF photo, undated

A closeup of this early-war Douglas B-18 "Bolo" bomber dubbed "SNAFU'S BIRTHDAY" shows a unique example of WW II nose art:  a stork bearing a diaper with a large-nosed Kilroy character peeking out (is this indisputable evidence that before he was Kilroy, he was Snafu?). The distinctive "shark nose" bombardier's blister of the B-18A is very clearly shown. Note what might be a version of the top-secret Norden bombsight covered up with canvas inside the blister. The .30-caliber Browning flexible machine gun mount is all taped up and ready for another mission. This is a rare photo, as only 217 B-18As were built.
