Past the Brink of Exhaustion

U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Paul Peters, dated May 30, 1945

Two Marine machine gunners of the 5th Marine Regiment sleep in their position on Okinawa, their heads tucked beneath a wooden plank. They are completely exhausted after three days of continuous fighting in eliminating Japanese resistance in the Awacha Pocket. Ration cans and other personal items are within easy reach despite the constant threat of a counter-attack.
