Tearful Goodbyes
Wide World News photo, dated May 27, 1940

Members of the Essex Scots Regiment, 2nd Canadian Infantry Division, kiss their children goodbye at the Windsor, Ontario, Canada railroad station. This is an exceptionally emotional photograph showing fighting men at the moment of separation from their families. The Essex Scots were decimated at the disastrous raid on Dieppe, France in August 1942. Many of the men who left Canada that day did not make it back home.
