Roman Welcome
Acme News photo, dated June 11, 1944

An elderly Italian woman waves a U.S. flag as an American tank destroyer unit enters Rome a week after the city's liberation. The tracked vehicle, based on enlargement of the blurry markings, seems to have been assigned to the 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division. While in action, men of the 804th were awarded eight Silver Stars, three Legion of Merits, and 60 Bronze Stars. 145 were awarded Purple Hearts, thirty of them posthumously. Campaign credits earned were for Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley.
