Stand-Ins for the Enemy

U.S. Army Signal Corps photo, dated October 12, 1942

During the filming of "The Fighting Engineers" — a U.S. Government war film shot at Fort Belvoir, Virginia (the home of the U.S. Army combat engineers), a director gives some instructions to "Japanese" soldiers, actually Filipinos in captured uniforms. A Vitaphone short (the Vitaphone was a sound-on-disc system developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories and Western Electric), the movie told the story of the training and activities of the U.S. Engineer Corps.
