Elite Marines Chow Down
Official U.S. Army Signal Corps photo

Either a group of Para-Marines or Marine Raiders are shown in a jungle chow line. Of interest is the weapon carried by the GI, fourth from right facing the camera — he's armed with a rare Reising M55 submachine gun, which was a .45 weapon with a folding wire stock, used ONLY by the Marine Corps. Developed for use by the short-lived U.S. Para-Marine units, and used by them and the elite U.S. Marine Raiders, photos of the weapon are rare. This photo must have been taken during a very early phase of the Pacific campaigns on New Guinea or Guadalcanal, as both the Reising and the 1903 Springfield rifles visible in the photo were replaced by better weapons shortly afterwards.
