A group of Navy pilots pleased over their aerial victories during the invasion of the Marshall Islands are all smiles as they pose behind the tail of a Grumman F6F Hellcat aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. These men shot down 17 of 20 Japanese planes heading for Tarawa to strafe and bomb U.S. troops who had landed there.
