U.S. Army Signal Corps photo, dated October 9, 1944

A mine, thought to have been placed in the street of this unidentified German village by civilians, killed three American soldiers shortly before this photo was taken. (Their wrecked jeep is at left.) One infantryman sweeps the street using a mine detector, while two others keep an eye open for other threats (note the man crouching has leaned his Tommy gun against the wall of the house at extreme right). The original caption reports that German villagers who initially welcomed the soldiers were closely questioned as the occupiers sought to identify those responsible for the ambush.
