Crowded inside a 45th Infantry Division prisoner-of-war cage in southern France are the 946 Germans, including 17 officers, of a German unit whom Lt. Clarence E. Coggins of Poteau, Oklahoma persuaded to surrender — after he himself had been taken prisoner! Coggins convinced the German commander that a superior number of Allied troops had the enemy force trapped, and arranged a mass surrender. Coggins may have been the proverbial salesman capable of selling an icebox to Eskimos!
