Waiting Wounded

International News photo, dated July 7, 1944

A group of American soldiers, wounded during battles behind the Normandy beaches, lay on the deck of a landing craft, waiting to be shuttled out to a hospital ship that will ferry them to England. Note the navy gunner looking down on the group from his machine gun position at upper right. To him, these men must have resembled sardines packed in a can. A corpsman, also at right, moves among the swaddled mass, adjusting blankets and making sure they're comfortable.
