Spiked!

undated Associated Press (Washington) photo via U.S. Army Signal Corps

A German 88mm gun, it's split snout pointed skyward, is examined by Technician Fifth Grade Walter Holloran on the road to Montebourg, France, shortly after the town was taken as the Americans advanced to Cherbourg in late June 1944. The gun has been "spiked," referring to a method of disabling artillery by detonating hand grenades or blocks of TNT inside the barrel, thus rendering the weapon unusable should the enemy recover it.
