Flying Bazookas

International News photo via U.S. Army Air Force, dated October 24, 1944

USAAF armorers took this muzzle-on view of three bazookas mounted on the wing struts of a Piper Cub artillery observation plane somewhere in France (another of the planes appears in the upper left background). Three launchers are attached to each wing of the plane, and can be fired from inside the cockpit. 9th Air Force Service Command armament specialists initiated and developed the idea of converting a few of the light liaison craft, normally unarmed, into rocket-firing planes.
