Snapping the Japs

Acme Newsphoto, dated May 7, 1943

A Kiska Task Force F5 tactical photoreconnaissance plane sits on an airstrip on the Aleutian island of Amchitka. The F5 was the camera-mounted version of the P-38 Lightning fighter. From Amchitka, F5s flew sorties over the Japanese-held island of Kiska some 63 miles away. The F5 could also provide coverage of Tokyo, only 1700 miles from Amchitka. Behind the F5 are a pair of C-47 troop carriers. Note the PSP (Perforated Steel Plank) runway that has been laid over the ground to support the weight of the aircraft when conditions got muddy.
