ACME Wire Press photograph, dated January 15, 1945

This is a rare photograph of a combat crew of one of the "colored" U.S. tank destroyer units operating in Belgium as the Battle of the Bulge was winding down. The all-black tank crew can be seen at the bow of their vehicle attaching a tow chain to snatch another tank destroyer that slid off the road on the ice. This may be one of the tanks of the 614th Tank Destroyer Battalion, or possibly the 761st Tank Battalion, also operating in this same area at the time.
