The Day War Was Declared

ACME News photograph, dated December 8, 1941

U.S. Army troops guard a bridge near Washington, D.C. on the day war was declared against Japan, one day after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. The unit is Battery C of the 55th Field Artillery from Fort Myer, Virginia. The photo was taken from the Virginia side of the bridge looking toward Georgetown. Note the three Browning M1917 water-cooled machine guns in the back of the White scout cars.
