Alligator on the Move

undated LIFE Magazine photo

A U.S. Marine Corp "Alligator" heads for the shore of an unidentified Pacific island. The Alligator was an amphibious tractor (aka amtrack, or LVT). It was a track-laying vehicle which derived its propulsion afloat from flanges fixed to the tracks, not unlike how motive power was generated by paddle-wheeled steamships. Originally intended as a vehicle of mercy, for rescue work in the Everglades, the Alligator was used on scores of landing operations in the PTO.
