Seabees Setting Up Defenses

undated U.S. Army Signal Corps photo

A U.S. Navy Construction Battalion antiaircraft machine gun team sets up their emplacement on top of a volcanic rock somewhere in the Pacific. Construction battalions (aka CBs, or "Seabees") were the Navy's equivalent of combat engineers in the Army. Note the early-war dungarees, spats, and floppy hats. The machine gun is a Browning water-cooled .30-caliber M1917 model with the fairly scarce antiaircraft "spiderweb" front sight assembly clearly visible.
