No Ordinary Sherman
U.S. Army Signal Corps photo, dated 1941

An M4 Sherman tank fitted with a rocket launcher fires a salvo during a training exercise. This version of the Sherman was known as the T34 "Calliope" and carried sixty 4.5-inch rockets on its turret-mounted carrier. Designed to provide a saturating swath of fire in a short amount of time ahead of assault troops, the T34 was nicknamed the Calliope due to the awesome pyrotechnics displayed during firing. They first saw action during Operation Cobra in July 1944, participating in the opening barrage on the German positions near St. Lo.
