Zamboogie Theatre
undated U.S. Army Air Corps photo

The 49th Fighter Group's "Zamboogie Theatre" is open for business somewhere in the Pacific. The structure was theater-made from local surplus, trees, fuel drums, bamboo, and canvas. The 49th played an important role in halting Japanese advances in the Southwest Pacific, providing air defense from Australia to the Philippines between 1941 and 1945. Major Dick Bong, a 40-kill ace, was a member of this unit. The sign on the pole in the center shows the local baseball league standings.
