D-Day in the South
ACME News Wirephoto, dated August 15, 1944

Three LCTs are shown beached after the invasion of southern France ("Operation Anvil") in August 1944. The photo was taken by famed ETO combat photographer Henry L. Griffen. The LCTs in view are clearly numbered US 1000, US 274, and US 222. Also in view is LST US 914 (later renamed the USS Mahoning County). A DUKW is being driven onto the beach in the foreground. Note the antiaircraft barrage balloon flying at left.
