A Guppy conversion of a WW II diesel submarine with an unusual bow modification undergoes testing. Guppy denoted "greater underwater propulsive power," and was the name of the U.S. Navy program to upgrade the underwater speed and endurance of existing boats. The program was stimulated by studies of captured German Type XXI submarines. The key features of a Guppy were extensive streamlining, more batteries, and a snorkel air-breathing system.
