uncredited photo, dated April 27, 1945

An explosion rocks Fort Drum in the Philippines after GIs of the 151st Infantry, 38th Infantry Division poured 5,000 gallons of gas into the fort's ventilation system and ignited it in order to destroy the entrenched Japanese garrison. Fort Drum was a so-called "Concrete Battleship" in Manila Harbor. The Japanese occupiers chose the to defend the fortress to the last man, and all were killed in the ensuing inferno. The story of this incredible fortification is told here.
