\ The World War II Photo of the Day

One of His Last Shots
Acme News photo, dated November 23, 1944

At left is one of last photos taken by Acme Pictures photographer Frank Prist, Jr., who was killed by a Japanese sniper during the Leyte campaign to liberate the Philippines. Leyte was one of the most deadly destinations for war correspondents. Just one terrifying explosion there claimed the lives of three reporters a few weeks before Prist was killed: Asahel Bush of the Associated Press, Stanley Gunn of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and John Terry of the Chicago Daily News.
