Taking Cover
Heinrich Hoffmann Propaganda News Service photo, dated August 4, 1944

A German panzer grenadier takes cover in a makeshift bunker during some heavy Allied shelling. Note the MP-40 submachine gun resting on the bunker's roof at right. The location is given as southwestern Caen, in the British sector of the Normandy lodgement. The roof is constructed primarily of branches and canvas with some metal plates used to hold the covering down. The photo has undergone some heavy-handed retouching to bring out details in the soldier's face.
