|A 4.2-inch chemical mortar crew is busy laying down a barrage against Japanese positions. Note the large pile of chemical rounds stacked at right. One of the loaders (center) is clearly flinching from the muzzle blast of a round just sent on its way. You can see the distortion of the air caused by the round as it leaves the barrel at the upper left of the photo. It is difficult to make out the marking bands on the rounds, but they are probably white phosphorus.
