Keeping the Kamikaze at Bay
ACME News wire photo, dated April 30, 1942

A pair of alert antiaircraft teams man the huge water-cooled, .50-caliber machine guns aboard an unspecified U.S. aircraft carrier. Note the fire-suppression foam that has been sprayed on the guns, deck, and men. This photo is unusual in that the original 1942 caption references a suicide plane attack on the carrier. Kamikaze attacks are generally attributed to much later in the war.
