Digging In on Amchitka
ACME News wire photo, dated May 7, 1943

Soldiers of the U.S. Alaska Defense Command are shown digging in on Amchitka Island in the Aleutian chain. Possibly Seabees, the men are carrying barbed-wire entanglement stakes that will be used to anchor coils of wire for a defensive position. Amchitka is only 63 miles from the Japanese-occupied island of Kiska.
